Asparagus Fern (Sprengeri) Plant

Sprengeri is a very popular plant with many uses. Although commonly called asparagus fern, this plant is actually a member of the huge lily family. Its botanical name is Asparagus densiflorus(Liliaceae Family). Our Sprengeri plants are strong and very healthy. Sprengeri  is an evergreen perennial with long, arching stalks that are wirelike with fluffy-green leaves. It has tuberous roots and produces small, insignificant white flowers followed by bright red berries. It is popular for hanging baskets as it will survive much neglect. It is also used as a trailing plant in combination color planters. In the deep south it is commonly used as a large ground cover in full sun and if frozen, the tops turn a lovely straw color until spring. It is root hardy and comes back well if the freezes are not severe. It is cold hardy in zones 9, 10 and 11.Sprengeri is very popular in cut arrangements. With its strong stems that support fluffy branchlets with soft green needles, it is a staple in the floristry industry. It has a vase life of  7 - 10 days.

Earth Star Plant

They are called "Earth Stars", because of their symmetry and unusual flattish shape. The botanical name is Cryptanthus bivittatus. Their nickname,Earth Stars, is most descriptive. They are small monolayered plants with little leaf overlap; they look like twinkling stars. Earth Stars are small and low spreading, flat rosette plants. They turn pinkish, if given plenty of light. Earth Stars make excellent indoor plants, perfect for a table, shelf or windowsill. Outdoors they are a great accent for a patio table. When the plant matures, small white flowers form in the rosette centre. Many small, baby plants develop here readily. New plants (pups) are formed on the sides of the plant in little clusters and are easily removed to start new Earth Stars. Simply dislodge te pups and place the bottom tip in soil to root. Light:    A sunny location is preferred but they will tolerate low to moderate sun. Temp:   They prefer temperatures in the range of 55-90 degrees Fahrenheit, but tolerate a temperature range of 38-100 degrees. Water:   These plants like to be treated similar to an African violet; not too wet, not too dry; they want to be evenly moist. Misting doesn't help these plants other than providing humidity, because the trichomes on Cryptanthus leaves do not absorb moisture or nutrients.
